Keep Your Home Warm
Baby, it’s cold outside and your house can feel it! Below are a few simple steps you can take to help keep your house warmer and prevent damage caused by freezing temperatures.
Inspect and Prepare
Have your fireplace and chimney cleaned and inspected before using it for the season. This will is very important as it helps prevent deadly house fires.
If you have radiators, bleed them to reduce air in the system and keep them at optimal performance.
Disconnect your hose and turn off the water valve to outdoor faucets.
Turn off your sprinklers and blow air through the lines.
Winterize your pools and hot tubs.
Drain and/or cover birdbaths and fountains that do not have fish in them.
Don’t Let Heat Slip through the Cracks
Remove or cover window and wall air conditioners.
If you have drafty windows or attic fans, cover them with plastic.
Caulk exterior cracks and holes as well as gaps around doors and windows.
Replace any worn weather stripping around doors and windows.
Use a towel or draft snakes in front of doors or on window sills to reduce drafts.
Use heave drapes to help reduce the draft. On sunny, non-windy days, pull them back to allow warmth into your home.
