Homemade Hand Sanitizer
SUPPLIES
1 Cup of 91% Isopropyl Alcohol (Rubbing Alcohol)
1/2 of Aloe Vera (Leaf or Pure Gel)
15 Drops of Essential Oil (Tea Tree Most Often Used)
Mixing Bowl
Knife
Spoon
Immersion Blender (Recommended)
Container
If you are using kitchenware you intend to cook with afterwards, stick with glass and metal, avoiding porous materials that may.
HOW TO
Cut the leaf and use a spoon to scope out a half of cup of aloe vera.
Mix the aloe until it has a gel like constancy.
Add 1 cup of rubbing alcohol. It’s important that it has a concentration of 91%. While other recipes allow for more diluted versions and some even substitute Vodka, doing so will prevent the final product from being effective.
Add 15 drops of your favorite essential oil. Most people use tea tree because of it’s anti-bacterial properties. I’m not a scientist, but in my opinion that is what the alcohol is for, so use your favorite scent.
Pour the newly blended hand sanitizer into a container so you can take it on the go.
WHAT I WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY
When working with fresh aloe vera it is a bit difficult to get the gel to the correct constancy so that it carries the alcohol. If you can find aloe vera gel without other ingredients mixed in, I would suggest using that instead a leaf.
If you are using fresh aloe try turning it into a gel like consistency by using a fork or immersion blender prior to adding the alcohol.
